Allied Waste Industries, Inc. (BFI’s parent company) is the second largest non-hazardous solid waste management company in the United States, with annual revenues of $5.5 billion. Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, they serve approximately 10 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in 118 major markets within 37 states.

The Challenge

Staying atop the waste-hauling business is no easy feat. The challenge to provide BFI’s superior service to millions of people combined with company restructuring and multiple sales priorities has been exciting for them, but a little overwhelming. Recognizing an opportunity for a critical training need and a chance to bring in some new ideas that support BFI’s investment in employee development, BFI’s Sales Administrator reached out to Ascendi. BFI needed a comprehensive and fun educational solution to introduce new methods for completing their numerous tasks as well as exciting ideas for confronting their old attitudes about time.

The Solution

BFI participants in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania training relied upon Ascendi’s knowledge and creativity to learn new Peaceful Productivity skills and explore as a group how some current operational objectives can be more easily reached by using innovative event control strategies. Before Ascendi partnered with BFI, redundancy was an issue, interruptions were frequent and sales professionals were limited by many inefficient paperwork tasks. With an engaging and highly interactive workshop, the sales team gained invaluable awareness, learned many ways to increase productivity and discovered methods to curb frequent internal and external interruptions.

The Benefit
 
The BFI sales team left their training excited and hopeful, with all of the attendees rating the full-day workshop and Ascendi’s trainer as “excellent”. With Ascendi’s guidance and BFI’s willingness to leave their comfort zones, a “revolutionary” idea was even created. The decision was made to create a Sales Department Constitution – a document created by their entire team that will soon contain a more efficient and effective strategy for streamlining sales operations for their entire region.

The Challenge

Striving to fulfill a vision to be the most admired defense and aerospace systems supplier is hard work. This task is made more challenging when faced with customer-driven deadlines and some stress management strategies that need “tweaking”. Recognizing an opportunity for growth and a chance to inject new ideas that support Raytheon’s passion for learning, the Human Resources department reached out to Ascendi. Raytheon needed a comprehensive, educational, non labor-intensive solution to promote exciting new methods of using their energy wisely and confronting outdated attitudes about stress.

The Solution
 
The insight and the expertise of the Ascendi training team – including needs-analysis capabilities, intervention design and benchmarking experience – fit the bill. Participants in Ascendi’s Stress Mastery workshop at the Falls Church, Virginia campus relied upon this training experience to enhance their levels of physical, mental and emotional energy and put a few new tools in their toolboxes. Before Ascendi partnered with Raytheon, deadlines were being jeopardized, strategic plans were not fully realized and tactical decisions lacked efficiency. With our training and follow-on coaching, participants gained awareness, deepened their capacity to expend and recover energy, and developed personal action plans to go forward fully engaged - with greater balance between their personal and professional lives.
